For the introductory vector analysis presented here, Gibbs [266], Aris [267], and Greenberg [268] all provide
useful treatment.
This appendix lists out vector operations in a number of coordinate systems as a guide to the reader. We have
omitted the more general approach, which is to write vector operations in terms of general orthogonal curvilinear
coordinate systems, as discussed in [5, 57]. Reference [269], furthermore, covers semi-orthogonal interfacial
coordinates in detail.
This text focuses on symbolic or Gibbs notation and omits Cartesian or Einstein notation. Cartesian notation
provides a much more compact treatment of vector/tensor operations in rectangular coordinate systems, and is
discussed in [56, 6, 58].
